An Earth Prototype for a Mars Settlement

I propose a working settlement on Earth that brings robotics, tunneling, electrical systems, and life support into one operating test site. It would help establish what machines can build and maintain before deploying those systems to Mars, while creating a prototype for protected communities on Earth during a major catastrophe.

Build a practical first phase. Choose a remote western U.S. site, potentially Wyoming, after evaluating geology, water, access, and hazards. Begin with a proposed 20–50 residents, modular enclosed surface habitats, a greenhouse, and connected underground spaces. A much larger campus could follow successful trials; separate, isolatable modules would make an initial project more manageable than a single enormous dome.

Test the machines as one system. Tesla describes Optimus as a robot intended for unsafe, repetitive, or boring tasks; The Boring Company already uses research tunnels to improve Prufrock. Extend that component testing into a settlement trial. Assign robots progressively harder material handling, inspection, cleaning, and maintenance tasks. Use tunneling equipment to test excavation and utility access, with separately engineered underground living spaces. Measure human interventions, task completion, energy use, breakdowns, and repair time rather than assuming autonomy.

Prove sustained operation. Integrate solar generation, battery storage, independent backup power, and redundant electrical controls with water recovery, ventilation, air treatment, waste handling, and food production. Run a proposed 12-month occupied trial, including a planned 90-day period without routine deliveries and controlled equipment-failure exercises, with emergency support available. Track power availability, water recovery, food supplied on site, spare-parts consumption, and outside labor per resident. Test delayed communications and loss of external connectivity.

Design for an Earth emergency. The same infrastructure could become a refuge during prolonged grid failure, supply disruption, or hazardous outdoor air. Protected underground areas, stored food, water reserves, independent communications, and maintainable power systems would be central. Define the hazards and required survival duration first; no single habitat could guarantee protection from every catastrophe or a direct major asteroid impact.

Use the results to guide Mars development. Earth allows faster repairs, safer intervention, and repeated redesign without interplanetary transport. It cannot reproduce Mars gravity, atmosphere, radiation, or local materials; those require separate validation. The value is proving that the settlement systems work together and identifying how much support they still need.

Requested next step. Commission a feasibility study defining site requirements, pilot capacity, engineering partners, costs, and measurable expansion criteria. Build an Earth prototype that advances Mars readiness and produces a useful resilience asset here.
